From The Principal

Ms Helen Carne
Dear Parent and Carers,
Congratulations to our students who continue to excel in academic, cultural and sporting areas. Tully SHS is an outstanding school with many exceptionally talented students! It is wonderful to showcase our students throughout our newsletter.
School Opinion Survey
Thank you to our parents who took the time to complete the School Opinion Survey in August. The Dept. of Education released the data this week and we greatly appreciate your honest and frank feedback. This survey is only completed once a year and provides excellent data on how we are travelling as a school in certain areas.
How did we go?
The 2025 most positive areas:
- 94.1% Agreement - Teachers at this school expect my child to do their best.
 - 91.5% Agreement – The expectations and rules are clear at this school.
 - 91.5% Agreement – This school celebrates student achievements.

The 2025 least positive areas:
- 74.1% Agreement – This school treats students equally, regardless of gender.
 - 65.0% Agreement – Student behaviour is well managed at this school.
 - 74.6%% Agreement – Teachers at this school treat students fairly.

Our greatest area of improvement in the student area is: My child likes being at this school. This statement increased from 2024 to 2025 by 17.1%.
The greatest area of improvement for parents is: This school takes parents opinions seriously. This statement has increased by 14.6%. The improvement in this area is excellent.
As a school we will continue to reflect and review our systems and processes. As parents and carers, I strongly encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns and issues that you believe need to be addressed. We must take all parents’ opinions seriously and work together to support our students to be successful in whatever their chosen pathway is.
Facilities Update
The tuckshop renovation started at the end of last term and due to structural advice from the builder, the whole tuckshop and the surrounding covered areas must be demolished. The great news is that the school will receive a whole new tuckshop building with adjoining under covered areas, this means that there will be a construction site in the middle of the school for quite a few months!
Thank you to Lauren Jarvis, Head of Special Education Services who submitted an application under the Education For All program and has been successful for the construction of a covered walkway from the front gate up to A block. Due to the age and deterioration of the existing concrete, a new covered walkway will be constructed. At this stage, we are unsure when this work will commence.
Year 12 External Exams
All the very best to our Year 12 students who will start external exams on Monday 27 October. External exams will run for a three-week period. During this time, Year 12 students need only attend school for their scheduled exam. If they are sick, they must contact the school and produce medical documentation. Please ensure all students engage in exam preparation, are well rested and hydrated prior to the exam. Students are able to contact their class teachers for support leading up to their scheduled exam.
Social Media
Our students are digital natives. For some students, a phone is an essential tool for everyday life. Very limited numbers of students use a social media platform to bully or post inappropriate content; as a school, we are required to teach safe and ethical social media practices. However, when a student is a victim of this, it is essential that parent/s report this. When social media sites are set up and the content is inappropriate, always contact the eSafety Commissioner to notify them of this.
I recently had a community member contact me regarding a social media site that was being used inappropriately by some of our students, I reported through to Dept. Of Education and it was assessed and removed from the social media platform.
With the new social media platform rules coming later this year, it is timely that we all support and act appropriately in this public way.
End of Year
Term 4 in a high school is always very busy with the completion of different year levels at varying times.
The following are key dates:
- Monday 27 October - Tuesday 18 November: Year 12 External Exams
 - Monday 17 November: Sports Award Evening 5pm
 - Tuesday 18 November: Awards Night 7pm
 - Wednesday 19 November: Year 12 Graduation
 - Friday 21 November: Final Day Year 12
 - Friday 28 November: Final Day Year 10 and 11
 - Friday 28 November: Year 7 – 9 Moderation Day
 - Friday 12 December: Final day Year 7 – 9

Our expectations are that all students must be at school every day, learning and completing their assessments to the best of their ability. If you plan for your child/ren to be away from school please ensure you are contacting the school to advise.
Yours in learning,
Ms Helen Carne

QATSIFs 2025
Talented Year 12 student, Dakoda Sanders, has been awarded the First Place trophy in the Mosaic category of QATSIF’s 2025 Creative Arts Competition.
Dakoda created a mosaic collection called Eyes to the Past, Eyes to the Future. It tells a story of what Dakoda’s First Nations ancestors saw regarding their country, and what her people hope to see emerging in the future. The use of mirror fragments in these pieces symbolises reflection: we reflect upon the past to create a brighter future for the next generation.

Annual Beep Test Challenge Highlights

Our Annual Beep Test Challenge was a fantastic display of fitness and school spirit! Students competed in Junior and Senior races for both females and males, with all participants earning valuable House points. This year, Mackay led the scoreboard with 12 points, followed closely by Kirrama with 11, while Tyson and Walter Hill each earned 6 points.
Congratulations to our individual champions - Jake and Lilou for the Junior races, and Jacob and Kassidy for the Seniors. It was wonderful to see so many students join in, creating a lively and encouraging atmosphere for everyone involved. Well done to all participants for their energy and enthusiasm!

World Mental Health Day at Tully SHS
Last Friday, our students showed their support for Mental Health Awareness Day by wearing green accessories – the international colour for mental health. It was a powerful visual reminder that it's okay to not be okay, and that support is always around us.
Some of the highlights of the day? The new SLT leaders and their team staged a joyful Just Dance! which had everyone smiling and moving together - a perfect reminder that staying active and connected is great for our mental health. They also wrote uplifting messages (in green chalk!) on the walls of the UCA. And still, every so often, we are reminded to Smile by a section of paving on our way to the classroom!

Lawson’s green for Mental Health – an awesome outfit! You certainly made us smile.
Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the day special. Let’s continue to break the stigma and support each other – not just today, but every day.

Year 10 Art
Over a period of nine weeks, Year 10 Art students have each been immersed in creating a papier mâché sculpture of an animal whose unique characteristics reflect their own personality and beliefs. These inventive creatures are on display at the Tully Library, alongside original poems that their makers have written to match their creation. As you can see from the photos, they are wonderfully individual and imaginative - pop in and have a look!

Good Luck Layla
Good luck to our Peninsula Track & Field athletes competing at the 2025 State Championships in Townsville!
A special shout-out to Layla M, who has been named a Team Captain – an incredible achievement! This event marks her 10th Peninsula Team in just three years – a truly momentous milestone. Congratulations, Layla!

A Sell-Out Success!
Year 10 Fashion Market Stall – A Sell-Out Success!
The Year 10 Fashion class held a market stall this week, offering their self-crafted accessories such as bags, scrunchies, pencil cases and hair clips to staff and students. Every item attracted a buyer, a testament to the appeal of the unique and original.

Cert II Resources and Infrastructure class!
Well done to our Year 10 Cert II Resources and Infrastructure class!
Today, they successfully completed their First Aid training — a vital skill for any industry employee and a big step toward their future qualifications.
A big thank you to the Australian Drilling Institute for running this important training session and supporting our students' learning journey!

Exciting Finish at the 100m Gift Race!
In a thrilling showdown at the school’s 100m gift race, Liam surged from behind to claim victory in the boys’ event, showcasing incredible speed and determination. Meanwhile, Stef held strong with her +7m star, crossing the line first to take out the girls’ race. Congratulations to both athletes for their outstanding performances!
