From The Principal

Ms Helen Carne
Dear Parent and Carers,
Congratulations to the following Year 12 students who attended the QATSIF Graduation Ceremony in Cairns on Wednesday this week:
- Abijah Chamberlain
- Elijah Kane
- Morgan Kelly
- Louise Koraba
- Lucius McAvoy
- Nicholas Muriata
- Rosealee Norris
- Bella Samperi
- Dakoda Sanders
- Brecken Zammit
QATSIF was created to give Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families increased educational choices and life opportunities. It is an independent, not-for-profit trust, managed by The Public Trustee for Queensland and operates through a small Secretariat.
QATSIF provides educational scholarships across Years 11 and 12 to support eligible First Nations students with the educational costs of their Senior studies. Students are required to meet strict criteria to be eligible each semester.
Congratulations to our students, their families and teachers, in supporting the wonderful success of this program at Tully SHS!
Teacher Strike Action
Thank you to the Tully community for your support on the Teacher Strike Action Day. It is vital that we stand together on valuing the role that teachers play in educating and developing our students in our community.
Tully SHS has a very proud tradition of developing early career teachers; however, we are definitely feeling the impact of the current teacher shortage: it is significantly affecting our daily operations.
As a school community, we must continue to value the role of a teacher and develop and encourage our own students to pursue this most rewarding career!
School Events
Transition Day
Thank you to all the Year 6 students who attended our transition day last week. The day was outstanding and provided a wonderful opportunity for students to spend a day at high school. A massive thank you to Rachelle Paton and Angela Bevan and our teaching staff for taking on extra lessons. The feedback from so many of the students was that they wanted to start high school the next day!
Mrs Paton and Mrs Bevan will be visiting the primary schools for enrolment interviews. We strongly encourage all students in our local schools to attend our wonderful community high school!
Cassowary Coast Southern Zone Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to all our students who participated in the Cassowary Coast Southern Zone 13 – 19 Years Athletics Carnival last Friday in Innisfail, and the Southern Zone 10 – 12 Years Carnival today at Lower Tully State School. Some records have been broken and this information will be shared in the Sports News section. All the best to our students competing at Peninsula level.
Year 10 Student Education Training Plans (SET Planning)
Term 3 is the time when a high school commences the timetable planning for the following year. This work begins with preparing Year 10 students for subject selection for the following year.
Thank you to Jarred Rohl, Isabelle Bushby and Rachelle Paton who are leading this work with our current Year 10 students.
The students have had multiple opportunities to engage in Career Expos in Townsville, Innisfail and Cairns to guide them to select suitable subjects for their chosen career path.
SET Plan interviews for all Year 10 students form part of this work. All parents/carers of Year 10 students are required to have a student and parent interview. Please contact Mr Rohl or Ms Bushby if you have not received this information.
Facilities Work
Next week, Tully SHS will welcome back Lavinia (Art by Lavinia Murals) to complete the second mural ‘All things sea’ with our Year 8 Art students.
No new learning Day
The Term 3 No New Learning Day is planned for Friday 22 August. At this stage, we are reviewing the format for this day. Further information will be published late next week.
With so much going on in our school community, we thank our staff, students and parents for ensuring we are always focussed on safe, respectful relationships at all times!
Yours in learning,
Ms Helen Carne
Principal
World’s Greatest Shave - Tully Way
Every year the Student Leadership Team stages their iteration of the World’s Greatest Shave, encouraging students to nominate and seek sponsorship to have their hair cut or shaved.
On Monday 4 August, four students – Will Dodds, Tait Cali, Liam McCormack and Bella Samperi - honoured their commitments, and in front of their cheering peers, lost their locks under the expert hands of barber Laurens, apprentice Jack, and Teacher Aides Laurice and Carrie.
Bella donated 25 cm of her long, never-coloured hair to be made into a valuable wig. Liam and Will emerged with completely shaven heads, a little shocked to feel that cold air on their exposed skulls, while Tait’s closely cropped hair gave him a stylish, trendy look.
Most importantly, these students raised an amazing $2,473.80 between them: Will topping with $1,000.80 in sponsorship, Bella close behind with $944, and Liam and Tait donating $307 and $222 respectively.
We are proud of these students for their community- minded spirit, for the time and energy they have given to this cause, and the fine example they have set to their peers.
