From The Principal

Ms  Helen Carne

Dear Parents and Carers,

Congratulations to our Tully SHS Show Cattle Team for your efforts at the Tully Show. Well done to all students who entered goods and products in the various sections.  It is a wonderful event where our community comes together.

Congratulations to our Years 11 and 12 students who participated in the Walker Memorial Cup last Wednesday and Thursday.  The girls’ team ended in a tie and the boys’ was won by the Year 11 side.  Awesome work to all our students who came out to cheer on and support our teams.  Tully is so strong in Rugby League and this tradition is outstanding.  Thank you to Mr Walker for coming along on the day.

Staffing Update

Welcome to Ms Tina Gibson - Deputy Principal Senior replacing Mrs Rebekah Bidois whilst she is acting Head of Senior at Bentley Park College for Term 3.

Further we welcome Ms Susan McQuillan Deputy Principal working on a part time basis to review and support development of our school systems and processes.  It is wonderful having Susan return to her high school and support our school community.

Open Night

Thank you to all parents, and future parents and students who attended our Open Night last Wednesday.  It was an excellent event with many parents in attendance.  The displays and information provided by our staff was outstanding!  As a school we have so much to be proud of and on this evening, teachers are able to share with our community the wonderful work produced at Tully SHS!

Student Reports

All students were issued their Semester 1 Report on Friday 18 July via parent emails.  If you did not receive your child’s report, please make contact with the office.

How did we go?

  • 46.4% of students in all subjects A and B – target 40%
  • 94.4% of students in all subjects A – C in behaviour
  • 89.2% of students in all subjects A – C in effort

Years 11 and 12:

  • 88.6% of students in all subjects A – C – target – 80%
  • 58.4% of students in all subjects A and B – target 40%
  • 98.1% of all students in all subjects A - C behaviour
  • 92% of all students in all subjects A – C effort

Outstanding work Tully SHS teachers and students!  We achieved our overall learning targets. Can we improve? Absolutely!   Our next challenge is to support our learners to continue to achieve excellence in all subjects. Our high expectation of learning goals is the main driver to school improvement.

School Opinion Survey

The suite of School Opinion Surveys is undertaken each year by the Department of Education to obtain opinions about our school from families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11).

The surveys will help identify what we are doing well, and understand where we can improve. The survey invitation will be emailed in the week beginning 28 July and is titled School Opinion Survey for Parents and Caregivers, 2025. Each school family will receive one email invitation from the Department of Education to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey.

The survey is anonymous, and the results are not reported in ways that an individual’s response can be identified by the school. Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to complete the survey. The survey can be completed via computers, tablets or smart phones with an internet connection. For Parents/Caregivers who do not have access to the internet, school computers/tablets will be available. Parents/Caregivers who experience difficulties accessing the survey can request a new survey from the School Opinion Survey team via email schoolopinionsurvey@qed.qld.gov.au

It’s important that as many parents/caregivers as possible complete the survey, so we would appreciate if members of this committee would raise awareness of this survey with other parents and caregivers. Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.

It will be greatly appreciated if you could complete this quick survey.

School Fees

Tully SHS offers a Student Resource Scheme (SRS) fee.  Compared to many high schools in Queensland, this cost is extremely low and our school is not considering raising this fee given the cost-of-living pressures. However, if parents choose to join the scheme, it is expected that the fee is paid in the current year.  We encourage and offer all families to pay the way best meets their needs (i.e. fortnightly via Centrepay; one lump payment; etc)

All fees must be paid or being paid off for students to participate in any extra-curricular activity.  These include sporting events, excursions, field trips, Year 12 Formal, Year 12 Senior Shirts and jerseys, etc.

If there is financial hardship, families are encouraged to make an appointment with me to discuss.

Facilities Update

The school has been advised that the commencement of the Tuckshop renovation will be Monday 18 August.

Shout Out to Chappy Steve

As a school leader, I love to share wonderful news that occurs in our school.  Did you know that Chappy Steve hand makes, writes and delivers a birthday card to each and every one of our students on their birthday!  The students absolutely love and appreciate this gesture.  Further, Chappy works within the community with volunteers to make the cards!  Thank you Chappy Steve!

Yours in learning,
Ms Helen Carne
Principal

Snowies

The winter holidays offered thirty-seven Year 12 students a memorable adventure on the 2025 Snowies Trip. The excursion has been revitalised since COVID interrupted the traditional Snowies: Mt Hotham and Melbourne didn’t disappoint in comparison to Perisher, Canberra and Sydney which many past students would remember.

Students had an early start on the first Sunday of the holidays to begin their adventure; bus to Cairns, flight to Melbourne with the final leg being another bus trip to Mt Hotham. Day One consisted of a lot of travel and ended with students playing in the snow, at eight o’clock at night.  Students mastered skiing and snowboarding skills over the next three days – they were quick learners and conquered difficult slopes. The warmth of a hot chocolate was appreciated by all as the temperature dropped.

Leaving the slopes, we headed down the mountain to Melbourne. The Kellyland experience at Glenrowan was educational, students witnessing an animatronic re-enactment of Ned Kelly’s capture. In Melbourne visits to Old Melbourne Goal, Hosier Lane viewing vibrant street artwork, ACMI (Australian Centre of Moving Images), Queen Victoria Markets, and Melbourne’s inner-city shopping provided a glimpse of Melbourne culture. A four-course dinner on the Spirit of Melbourne Yarra River Cruise was spectacular, with city lights as a backdrop.

NAIDOC WEEK

Tully SHS celebrated NAIDOC Week in the first week of Term 3. Indigenous Leaders Rosealee and Jake opened the Assembly with acknowledgement of the 2025 theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.

A range of activities throughout the week engaged students – arts and craft; Southern Schools NAIDOC celebrations at Jumbun; Deadly Choices sponsored PBR (Professional Bully Riding) experience at Cairns Convention Centre.

Thanks to the Deadly Choices sponsors, our Indigenous students had an amazing experience at the Professional Bull Riders Australia event, gaining insight into the intense, exciting world of bull-riding, and boosting their cultural pride, confidence, and community connections along the way.

Perusing Opportunities

At the end of the July school holidays Year 12 student, Mikayla Waina, proudly represented Queensland in the Top Model Australian National Finals in Melbourne. This was a competition many months in the planning, where she walked the runway with 24 other lucky national finalists.

During the Top Model journey, Mikayla has been able to experience a multitude of career opportunities such as professional makeup and photography, along with the professional runway event. These encounters have given Mikayla some insight into the fashion and modelling industry. The Top Model National Finals included the Top Model and Junior Runways, and showcased designs from up-and-coming fashion designers from RMIT.

Mikayla enjoyed the experience and has made lasting connections in pursuit of her modelling career.

Senior Fashion

Our Senior Fashion students were very privileged to have a visit from an ex-student and highly recognised businesswoman, Angelique DiBella. Her journey in the fashion industry has involved countless hours of designing and construction, and has been acknowledged with several awards. For our students, this was a great opportunity to envisage their own careers in this field.

Cairns Show Young Rural Ambassador

It was wonderful to see Sam Patch embracing her role as this year’s Cairns Show Young Rural Ambassador. An enthusiastic and highly competitive cattle-parader, Samantha also won the 15 to 18 years Commercial Cattle Judging competition in Cairns last week.

SLT NEWS

Today – Thursday, Week 2 – the Team cooked 500 sausages to honour the Walker Cup, instituted by the parents of the boys who lost their lives to suicide some years ago. Being Men’s Mental Health Week further underlined the importance of dealing with the emotional vulnerability of boys and men. This free barbeque was certainly appreciated by all students – such a snack surely makes the rest of the day flow smoothly.

Another event long in the planning is the World’s Greatest Shave, to be held in Week 4, on Wednesday 6. Several students have nominated to have their hair cut off – Will Dodd, Tait Cali and Liam McCormack – with the proviso that they rally sponsors to donate to the cause. Bella Samperi is planning to donate 30 cm of her long locks and has received strong backing. Other students will pay $5.00 to have their hair spray-coloured. If you are able to donate, please go to the WGS website and search for Tully SHS 2025, or click on this link: https://www.worldsgreatestshave.com/fundraisers/tullystatehigh2025

Then in Week 5, we are hosting  the famed Tully’s Got Talent, always a crowd pleaser. We will keep you posted!

Walker Memorial Cup

The annual Year 11 v Year 12 Rugby League Matches took place last week.  Both games were a wonderful display of school spirit and TSHS pride.  Thank you to the coaches of each team for the time they gave to prepare the players for this much anticipated event.

Thank you also to our referees, Mr Maioha and Anthony Emmi, for officiating the matches.  These events are a wonderful tradition celebrated each year, and rely on the efforts of our wonderful staff to pull them together.  Thank you also to spectators, including parents and our special guests, Mr Bruce Walker and Mr Shane Muriata, for attending.
