From The Principal

Ms Helen Carne
Dear Parent and Carers,
Welcome to Term 1, Week 6 newsletter. Happy International Women’s Day 2025
Staffing Updates
Over the coming weeks, there will be a number of staffing changes due to staff going on leave:
- Mrs Rachelle Paton – Acting Deputy Principal Junior
- Mrs Robyn Sloan-Orlandi – Acting Deputy Principal Senior
- Mr Jarred Rohl – Acting Head of Department Middle
- Mrs Bianca Parkes – Acting Head of Senior
- Mr Joshua Zahn – Year 9 Year Level Coordinator
Please don’t hesitate to contact the office: you will be directed to the right person.
Lockdown and Emergency Evacuation Procedures
All school are required to have defined lockdown and emergency evacuation procedures. In the event of a lockdown, Tully SHS will attempt to make contact with parents/carers during the lockdown to advise that we are in lockdown and do not enter the site. Upon completion of the lockdown, we will SMS all registered parents/carers that the lockdown is completed and we have resumed normal operation of the school.
The purpose of the text message is to ensure parents and carers are informed of this critical event in our school community.
In the event of an emergency evacuation, Tully SHS will contact all parents/carers after the emergency evacuation to advise that we have resumed normal operation of the school.
To ensure our systems are working, when we complete a drill of the above mandated procedures once a term, Tully SHS will SMS to advise that we have completed a drill.
AGM P&C Meeting
The Annual General Meeting for the Parent and Citizens Association will be held on 19 March, 2025 (Wednesday) 5.30pm in the Millside Café. We need your support and would love as many parents as possible to attend and become active members of this very important decision-making committee for our wonderful school. I encourage and welcome all new parents to attend this meeting!
National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Commences
All students in Years 7 and 9 (unless exempt) will be sitting the NAPLAN tests commencing from Monday 10 March. We expect all students to complete the tests to the best of their ability. As a school, this data is publicly shared: our school and students need to demonstrate that we are achieving outstanding results.
I encourage all parents and carers to help prepare our students for these tests by ensuring they are well-rested, well-fed and value the outcomes.
Further information on the testing is included in our newsletter.
All the best to our students!
No New Learning/Moderation Day
In 2024, Tully SHS introduced moderation days to allow teachers to work together to plan the next term’s unit of work. We are planning for these days to continue in 2025: one day per term.
Students are able to attend school; however, they will not be in their regular, timetabled classes. I will send out a separate letter, requesting information on expected student numbers. Students are not required to attend school on this day. They can work from home to study and complete assessments.
Friday 21 March is the planned No New Learning Day for Term 1.
We sincerely thank our school community for working with us to allow this day to go ahead.
Assessment Focussed
As the end of term approaches, it is critical that students remain engaged and focussed on their learning and the completion and submission of their assessment. This is the core purpose of schooling and at Tully SHS we expect every student will complete and submit all of their assessments to the very best of their ability! Please contact your offspring/s’ teachers if you believe they require additional support to pass their subjects! We need to ensure that our students are assessment-ready and maintain their learning stamina right to the end of term!
Have an awesome fortnight!
Yours in learning,
Ms Helen Carne

Duke of Edinburgh News

Jarred Rohl
Duke of Ed
Award Leader
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is available for students in Years 9-12 at Tully SHS. This award is designed for students who are ready to challenge themselves and develop skills for the real world. The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is focussed on supporting young people to thrive.
Next week is an opportunity for students to and hear more about the Duke of Edinburgh program and how it can improve their social awareness, physical fitness and teamwork capabilities. For students in Years 9 and 10 we will have induction sessions run during Wellbeing. Students will be able to ask questions about the program and learn more about the Adventurous Journey.
If students are interested in learning more about the Duke of Edinburgh program, please collect a form from Mr Rohl or Miss Harper to secure their spot at the induction session.

Morning Tea for Tomorrow’s Women
We always celebrate International Women’s Day at Tully High School, sometimes with a ‘Breakfast’ and guest speakers from the community, or a trip to Cairns for a more formal affair, or even a pop-up Bazaar.
On Wednesday this week, girls from different year levels enjoyed a special cake, uplifting music, and brief addresses from Mr Mortimer, who spoke about some valued connections with women in his life, and Mr Roberts, who encouraged the girls not to be pressured to downplay their abilities and intelligence. Four lucky girls won door prizes. A themed quiz revealed surprising astuteness among the younger ones, and fierce competition from everyone. It was fun, at times moving, and a very large cake was demolished.
