From The Principal
Dear Parent and Carers,
Welcome to Term 2, Week 10 Newsletter, the last one of Semester 1. Thank you to our school community - students, parents and families and staff for your support to our students this Semester. Schools are extremely busy and hectic environments; it is wonderful that we can always share so many positive stories with our community.
Year 10 Work Experience
A massive thank you to the employers, small businesses and people in our local community who have supported the 111 Year 10 students participating in Work Experience. What an amazing opportunity! I am sure our students are modelling outstanding respectful and responsible behaviours in all workplaces.
Thank you to Catherine Aspinall - Work Experience Coordinator, Jarred Rohl – Year 10 Coordinator and Rachelle Paton – Head of Middle School, for making this happen in partnership with our community.
Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to all students and staff who participated in the Athletics Carnival. This event is always a huge amount of fun and the weather was perfect this year. The Age Champions and the winning House will be announced after the holidays.
Student Reports
All students will be issued their Semester 1 Report on Friday 12 July. Teachers are required to report on academic achievement, effort, behaviour and may select the parent-teacher interview option, but individual student reporting comments will no longer be included.
If teachers have indicated that a parent-teacher interview is recommended, parents are advised to make direct contact with the class teacher to arrange a suitable time and method of communication. Many parents may prefer a phone call.
The annual Tully SHS Open Night is planned for Wednesday evening July 24. This is another opportunity for parents to talk with teachers.
Your Feedback
In the recent survey completed by 95 parents:
- 69% agree - Student behaviour is well managed at Tully SHS; 2023 55.2%
- 71% agree – The school asks for my input; 2023 55.6%
- 74% agree – The school takes parents’ opinions seriously; 2023 62.7%
- 80% agree – My child’s learning needs are being met at this school; 2023 66.1%
- 73% agree – This school fosters respectful relationships among all students; 2023 69.1%
- 75% agree – Teachers at this school treat student fairly; 2023 68.7%
Our role as a school is to ensure we are constantly seeking parent, student and community feedback. Thank you to the parents who took the time to provide this feedback. This data will be shared with the P&C association and we will look for further innovative ways to engage with our parents.
Always contact the school if you have any issues that need to be addressed or if you would like to offer suggestions and feedback. We need to hear your voice/suggestions/recommendations!
Our goal is to achieve at least 80% satisfaction in all indicators from the School Opinion Survey.
NAIDOC Celebrations
National NAIDOC Week coincides with the first week of Term 3. This annual week is a celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme for 2024, chosen by the National NAIDOC Committee, is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud. Tully SHS is planning a week of celebrations with a dance troupe and local Traditional Custodians visiting our school.
Some of our Indigenous students have been invited to attend the Professional Bull Riding (PBR) in Cairns on the Friday as a result of their hard work and dedication to their studies.
Facilities Update
During the holidays, some building works will be conducted around the school. A number of buildings will receive new gutters, and the covered walkway between the Staff Lounge and Library will commence with the relocation of existing air conditioning units.
Finally, have a wonderful break and enjoy the time with your children. If you are planning a trip away, travel safe. We look forward to seeing all our students again on Monday July 8.
Yours in learning,
Ms Helen Carne
Principal
From the Deputy Principal – Senior Schooling.
As Term 2 comes to a close, we celebrate the achievements of our students across Years 10 to 12.
Our Year 10 students are out for the rest of this week, experiencing the world of work to help with decisions that will be made next term with Senior Education & Training (SET) Plans among the student, their parents/guardians and select school staff. The range of pathways available to young people is amazing: if you are willing to have a go and work hard, anything is possible. A quote that I value is: Nothing worthwhile is achieved without effort. Well done to our Year 10s who are tracking at an 87.3% attendance rate across Term 2. I look forward to seeing this improve next term.
Students across our Senior School are on track in class and have been completing exams and assignments over the past few weeks. The effort that each individual student has put in will be communicated in report cards to be sent out at the start of next term. Year 11 students should now be settled into their chosen classes: subject changes will only occur after a meeting with either Mrs Robyn Sloan-Orlandi (Head of Department – Senior Schooling) or me. Keeping students on track to achieve their pathway goals and a QCE is a priority here at Tully State High School. It is important that Year 11s are here every day; current Year 11 attendance for Term 2 is 87.3%.
As Year 12 students enter the last stretch of their five years of high school, it is important that they do not give up at the final hurdle. Attendance for Year 12s for Term 2 is 96.18 %, based on ‘present + approved absences’. Well done to our 12 cohort for keeping their attendance high.
I wish all of our school community a safe and restful school break. I look forward to our students’ return for Term 3, 2024.

Yr 11 Camp
On May 22 – 24, fifty-seven Year 11 students ventured to the Eco Creek Adventure Camp.
Once we arrived, we were introduced to our sleeping quarters where the girls discovered that the tent situation was not glamping - quite a few creepy crawlies came out to welcome them!
We got straight into some small team building activities where students had to see how long a ‘snake’ they could make with a Minties wrapper (Hugh discovered what a Minties tasted like for the first time!) We made towers with straws and got to know someone different in amongst the group and made up a buddy handshake.
After lunch, we started on our organised activities which we rotated through for the remaining time at camp: rock climbing/ abseiling, challenge course, laser tag and raft building. We also went on a bush walk to Eco Falls which gave us more than we expected- a 4WD track to the base and a chest-high creek crossing to make sure we weren’t getting too hot in between rain showers. Students had to use team work, communication skills, co-operation and patience among many other skills to complete the activities. Some students were pushed out of their comfort zones but were so proud of themselves afterwards for what they had achieved.
Overall, we had a great time, learnt a lot, and were in desperate need of sleep when we returned home.
A Stylish Occasion
A highlight of the Tully 100 calendar of events, the 100 Years of Fashion Tea Party served up a classy treat on Saturday, June 1, and was held in the wonderfully transformed MultiPurpose Centre.
Around 360 guests spent an entertaining and nostalgia-infused afternoon as a group of lively models, many of them current and past Tully High School students, wove their way and, at times, danced among the tables, dressed in clothes of earlier decades. Most of these would have been familiar to the audience of mainly women, some of whom would have lent the hard-working Boutique Marie crew a garment or two.
Displayed around the perimeter were some beautiful wedding dresses from the 1920s and beyond, including a de luxe number from Natalie La Spina, and a few elaborate christening gowns. Selia Maingay kindly lent her mother-of the-bride gowns - all five of them! Three generations of Debutante Ballgowns were also featured by the models. A surprise showing – the outfit worn by the Tully torch bearer of Sydney 2,000!
Watching on from the sidelines, silently and delicately making their presence felt, the portraits of Nursing Home residents added resonance to the proceedings. These striking likenesses have been painted by the Year 9 Art Class during and after a series of visits to the Tully Nursing Home, and reflect the burgeoning relationships that were formed in the process.
A Tea Party is not a Tea Party without cake – and this is where the Hospitality teachers (Michelle Kurshat, Amy Sacklikidis and Robyn Sloan-Orlandi) and students excelled. The accompanying photos only hint at the heights this High Tea attained! Widely praised by those in attendance, the students excelled in all aspects of their assigned task – baking, presenting, and serving.
The One Hundred Years of Fashion has created its own fond memories, and will be making a substantial donation to Tully’s Hospital Foundation. It is yet another fine example of how the people of our community come together and create worthwhile experiences.

Dancing and Dining
A baked dinner, live music, and a group of friends – what could be better? Well, as it turned out, nothing much. Last Friday night’s Dinner Dance in celebration of Tully 100 was widely praised as a great night.
Not one band, but two – The Band of the 1st Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR Band), based at Lavarack Barracks in Townsville, put on a fantastic performance, alternating with a great rock/pop group. Together they injected the evening with energy and joy.
Guests enjoyed a classic baked dinner, followed by desserts created and served by our hard-working Hospitality students, the backbone of all our culinary ventures.
These sorts of occasions are increasingly rare, despite their appeal: it was inspired of the Tully 100 organisers to include it in the celebrations. No wonder tickets sold out so fast.

A Grande Parade
The photos say it all, so I will be brief!
Our float celebrated our school’s 60th birthday, fortuitously coinciding with Tully’s 100th. Conceived and built by core members of the SLT and some handy teachers – thanks Ebony Harper, Chris Calleja, Glenda Tenni and Thierrine Bromley – the cake slice, with its proud candle and vibrant balloons, is still intact and adorning the eLearning room. Thanks to Warren Giffen for his trusty ute and skillful chauffeuring, and to Pacific Fasteners, who came to our aid with some precious helium gas!
The crowds who lined Butler and Bryant Street made it all worthwhile. They are our community: their cheers matched our popper squeaks!

Tully Cluster Instrumental Music
The Tully Cluster Instrumental Music students joined forces yesterday for their first annual Band Camp Day at Mission Beach SS. It was a great opportunity for our high school students to show off their musical mentoring skills with the younger Instrumental Music students from around the area. The band really is sounding great after just one big day of rehearsal. Save the date: Tuesday August 20 for when you can come and hear the ‘Mega Band’ perform at the Tully Cluster Tutti Frutti Concert in the MPC.
