Term 2 - Week 2 - April 2024
From The Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Term 2, Week 2 Newsletter. It is wonderful to have our students back at school for another term. Term 2 is always very busy, with many short weeks due to public holidays.
Anzac Day Ceremonies
A massive thank you to all students who turned up to represent our wonderful school in the various ANZAC day parades. The Tully ceremony was impressive, with so many people coming out in the sunshine for the parade. A huge congratulations to our student leaders who represented our school with respect and pride. Thank you to the students who marched in uniform or represented various community groups! Great work Tully SHS!
A special mention to Jake Ball (the bugler) who played the Last Post at the Tully SHS ceremony, El Arish and Tully Dawn Parades and the Tully 10am parade.
The Tully SHS Anzac Ceremony was exceptional. This ceremony is led by the Year 10 History classes with teachers Mr Col Miller and Mr Jarred Rohl. The parade was outstanding. Congratulations to all the students involved in leading this ceremony. Thank you to our students in the audience who displayed exceptional respectful behaviours at all times!
Moderation Day
Thank you, Tully SHS parents and carers for overwhelmingly supporting our first moderation day. This day would not have been possible without your support and honouring the time that teachers need to work together to develop high quality unit plans.
For your interest, a full-time classroom teacher is only mandated 210 minutes per week to prepare class lessons. This non-contact time is not able to be used for teachers to meet and plan together. Providing teachers with time together has great impact on improvement in student learning and outcomes.
A survey will be emailed to all parents and students in next few days to gather your feedback on the day. The feedback information will be shared in a newsletter.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent teacher interviews for planned for Tuesday 30 April in the MPC from 3pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet with class teachers to discuss progress and improvement strategies for each subject. Please follow link in your email to book.
School Fees
Tully SHS offers a Student Resource Scheme (SRS) to all students. The scheme has the approval of the school’s Parents & Citizens Association and provides parents with the following general benefits:
- Minimises costs of providing resource materials for their student
- Ensures that an adequate bank of resources is available to provide a good quality education
- Ensures all students have equal opportunity to participate in any subject regardless of family financial circumstances.
The participation fee for the student resource scheme is $220 per student for Years 7 and 8 and $240 per student for Years 9, 10, 11 and 12. Every effort has been made to contain the cost of the participation fee whilst ensuring that adequate resources are available for student use. This contribution is in addition to the government resource allowance. The scheme represents excellent value and provides substantial savings to parents of students in all year levels.
For students to participate in extra-curricular activities (school sport, Year 12 Formal, camps, etc) or to purchase non-essential items through the school (Senior jersey and Senior shirts), all school fees should be paid or a payment agreement to Centre Pay commenced. If there are any financial difficulties, parent/carers are encouraged to meet with the principal to discuss other arrangements for payments.

Student Attendance
Finally, it takes a village to raise a child, and we encourage and support all our local businesses not to serve our students in uniform during school hours (8.45am – 2.45pm) without a parent/carer present or student presenting a pass-out slip. We are hoping to share this message across our local community with posters and information to support our students being at school.
Have an awesome fortnight, and all the best to our students representing our school in the various events planned.
Yours in learning,
Ms Helen Carne
Principal

SLT Handball Competition
Handball is a very popular activity here at school. Some players are on the courts from the moment they arrive, and again at both Breaks. Those whose buses leave a bit later will handball a few times and then rush off. Games are typically friendly affairs: rarely is there disagreement about who just did what – players line up, wait for their turns, hit balls, miss balls, and go back to the end of the line. No shoving, no yelling, just an eagerness to do it all over again.
In the last week of Term 1, the Student Leadership Team instituted the first of what could become a regular event, given this almost-obsession, a Handball Competition! Interest was very keen, so much that the event was split over two days. A final fast-paced round threw up a winner – Ethan Bisson, with Zai Ferguson second, and Riley Lindsay third. All three boys were awarded generous tuckshop vouchers.

P&C Report
Welcome, parents and carers, to a brand-new year at Tully State High School.
My name is Katie McLaughlin, the president of our school’s P&C. Our executive committee for 2024 consists of Wendy Finlayson as vice president, Trish Ryan as secretary and Tammy Sloan as treasurer.
We were encouraged to receive so many new memberships at our AGM and other parents coming along just to have a look. We are always open to new members and would love to meet more parents at future meetings, so I personally extend an invitation for you to attend. We have two to three meetings per term, on the third Thursday of the month at 3.30pm or as otherwise notified. Meetings can be attended in person or via phone hook-up on TEAMS.
The benefits of attending meetings include:
- You have a direct line of communication with our principle, Helen Carne, who discusses future plans for the school, education and teaching changes and what it takes to have a safe, and vibrant community for our kids.
- We review our Tuckshop and Uniform Shop operations to ensure they are in line with our goals and student needs, and discuss where our profits should be spent in the school.
- We are part of the leadership of the school, participating in Awards Night and reviewing the aspiring future student leaders of the school.
It would be fantastic to meet new parents or carers at meetings who reflect the current cohort and can contribute towards decisions that impact their offspring. As a member of the P&C for the past three years, I have enjoyed contributing to the school and keeping up-to-date with school events. An active and diverse membership is vital for the longevity of our P&C, and fundraising through the Tuckshop and Uniform Shop is appropriately targeted.
If you are interested to know more about your school P&C please come along and help be a part of your child’s education into young adult hood. Our next meeting is on May 16 at 3.30pm at the MillSide Café (behind the MPC). I look forward to seeing you there. Please contact the school if you want to attend via TEAMS.
