From The Principal
Dear Parent and Carers,
Welcome to the Term 1, Week 9 Newsletter. As we are nearing the end of term, thank you to the Tully community for your warm welcome to all our new staff and students. The term has been extremely busy and our students have done a great job in remaining focussed on our main game of completing and submitting assessments. Interim report cards will be issued to parents on Friday 19 April.
Student Achievements
Congratulations to Tully SHS student Kaedyn Ketchell for being contracted to the North Queensland Cowboys as a Junior. We are extremely proud of Kaedyn for this achievement!
Congratulations to Matilda FoersFrank and Sipi Sipi for being awarded a scholarship from the Tully Lions Club. This scholarship is in memory of a former teacher, Mr John Wilson.
There are so many students achieving outstanding success, so please don’t hesitate to share this wonderful news with our school community.

Welcome to our new Guidance Officer, Ms Chrystene Conder, who will be joining the Tully SHS community at the beginning of next term. Ms Conder is joining us from Nerang SHS on the Gold Coast. Students will be able to access Ms Conder from the Guidance Officer room in A block.
Welcome back to Mrs Naomi Smith, who has been on leave for Term 1 this year.
Farewell to our school nurse, Mrs Sue Skinner. Sue has been at Tully SHS for a number of years and worked to support students with health needs. All the very best to Sue in her retirement.

NAPLAN
NAPLAN is done and dusted for another year. Great work to our Years 7 and 9 students who completed NAPLAN. Thank you to Mrs Rachelle Paton, Mrs Angela Bevan, Mr Mark McLoughlin and all staff who supported the organisation of this testing.
To support our school attendance target, we are hoping that every student will be able to attend every day next week, right up to and including the Swimming Carnival, unless the absence is explained.
Have an awesome Easter break – travel safe if going away and take the time to enjoy your time with your children!
Yours in learning,
Ms Helen Carne
Principal
Yarning Circle
Last year, Miss Lisa, Miss Ford and our students implemented Yarning Circle during lunch breaks on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Our Yarning Circle is a harmonious, creative, and collaborative way of communicating. We encourage responsible, respectful, and honest interactions among students, mentors, and guests. Our aim is to build trusting relationships, foster accountability and provide a safe place for students free from feeling judged or left out.
This year we have decided to add another component to our yarning - crocheting. Many students find it easier to focus on something else while we yarn. At this stage, we are still practising how to hold the yarn and hook, progressing to learning how to crochet chains and how to single stitch within the chains. We are looking forward to improving our skills with students and aiming to make beanies as our first project.
Townsville History Excursion
During Week 6, a group of twenty nine Year 10 History students had the opportunity to visit the Army Museum of North Queensland at the Jezzine Barracks in Townsville.
Students were guided through the museum and visited exhibits detailing the events of World War I, World War II, the Vietnam war and the Korean war. They gained an insight into what life was like in the trenches of World War I, saw the weapons used by soldiers during the Kokoda campaign and learnt about the tunnel rats of the Vietnam War. The museum has an extensive display of personal items from Australian troops, war medals, honour rolls for those who survived, and original photographs of Australians at war.
After the museum visit, the group walked to the Kissing Point Fort, built prior to World War I, which overlooks Magnetic Island and the Townsville coastline. In the afternoon, the home ward journey was paused at Cardwell, where students braved the mozzies and visited the Coral Sea Memorial to better understand the importance of that World War II battle and learn about the stories of Australians who fought in the conflict.
It was great to see students excited to enhance their understanding of Australia’s history.

SnoCones for Wildlife
Another successful initiative from the Student Leadership Team!
Mission Beach Wildcare is a non-profit organisation that provides rescue and retrieval of animals, emergency and pre-release care, co-ordination of carers, and access to veterinary resources. It was formed as a working group of C4 (Community for Coastal and Cassowary Conservation Inc.) over twenty years ago and has made a real difference to our local fauna.
Such organizations rely heavily on volunteers and donations to achieve their goals so on Wednesday the SLT held a SnoCone sale, the first of the year, with the intention of donating all the profits to Mission Beach Wildcare. Thanks to the great team effort – Grace, our School Captain, had been making ice for the last two weeks – and the enthusiasm of the students, we have been able to donate over $400 to this valuable cause.
Well done everyone!
