From The Principal
This, of course, will be our final newsletter for the year. On behalf of the school staff, teachers and students, I would like to thank you for your support and patience through the year and wish you the best for the upcoming holiday break. Term 4 is always a special term for me, as we celebrate a whole range of events.
The Awards Night was a special evening this year, with close to 150 awards presented to students for academic achievement throughout the year. The Southern Zone Sport Awards presentation the previous evening, involving schools from around the Cluster, recognised close to 200 students’ achievements in the sporting arena. And of course, we cannot forget that other memorable ceremony - Graduation for our Year 12 students of 2023.
High Expectations
The school has worked closely with students throughout the year to maintain high attendance rates. Some Wellbeing lessons have been dedicated to working with students on the need to come to school every day to enable them to achieve their best possible results. Students with high attendance have participated in reward activities over the past couple of weeks.
We continue to have high expectations of students’ achievements in class. We have used student placements as a focal point for discussion and have seen some excellent results. I noted particularly the overall Term 4 assessment results for Year 8 Mathematics being a B average – great work from our students and classroom teachers. Reports will be sent out via email on Friday 8 December.
2024 School Year
Students all return to school on Monday 22 January 2024. Due to a change in timetable structure, school hours will be from 8:50am to 2:45pm. Buses will still run as per normal, except some will start at Tully SHS and then collect primary students, reversing the current order. There may be some teething problems here, so we ask for your patience.
A reminder to students that Phones Away for the Day processes will be in place for 2024. This term we have introduced this policy gradually to ensure students are prepared for the start of the new year.
School Leaders – 2024
Tully SHS will have a strong set of student leaders again to support and represent the student voice. I have worked with many of our 2024 leaders already and can testify to their leadership skills and passion to support their peers:
School Captains – Jamie Muriata & Grace O’Kane
Junior School Captains – Charlize Gee & Jackson Solien
SLT President – Zoe Waters
Sports Captain - Ellie Jenkins
Indigenous Leaders – Sipi Sipi & Tia Roggensack
SLT Vice-Presidents – Chantelle Topacio & Alana Cooper
Junior Indigenous Leader – Amarri Cassady
Staff changes
Our staff at Tully SHS play a vital role and we have some of the best teachers in the Far North based at our school! Each year we do see some of our teachers being transferred to other schools across the State and we thank them for their work and high expectations of our students. We farewell Ms Brockhurst, Ms Ryan, Ms Watt, Mr Jeloudev and Mr Gibbons, each of whom are starting at a different school in 2024.
I also want to make a special commendation to three staff who have been acting in leadership roles for extended periods of time.
Ms Willis has finished up in her role as Junior Secondary HOD. Her work with local Cluster Schools and the transition process has been of the highest quality and enabled Year 6 students to settle in quickly at high school. She has worked extensively in both the emotional and social wellbeing space, along with fostering academic capabilities for all of our Years 7, 8 & 9 students to ensure success in their senior years.
Ms Smith has been capably supporting our students with disabilities during the year. She has been involved in transition of students from local Cluster schools and is passionate about these students succeeding at school and beyond, regardless of their disability.
Mr Jeloudev has been acting in the Deputy Principal role in place of Mr McLoughlin. Mr Jeloudev brought with him the wisdom of working for several years up at Tagai, and has supported staff and students in the Junior Secondary area, gaining respect for his good humoured, relatable approach.
Principal – 2024
I will also be away from the school for a period of time in 2024. I have taken on a Regional Office contract working with other school Principals in the region. I am looking forward to the challenge of a new role in the region and hope to bring some new found wisdom back to Tully SHS in the future. Acting in the Principal role in 2024 will be Ms Helen Carne. She is currently the Principal at Ravenshoe SS and is excited about taking on the role in 2024. Helen is a past student of Tully SHS and St Clare’s, so knows the area well. Please make her feel welcome in 2024.

Principal
Awards Night 2023
On Tuesday 14 November, our annual Awards Night took place in the Multi-Purpose Centre with huge numbers of students receiving awards. This year, Subject Awards were handed out in all year levels, recognising the top student achiever in each of these subjects. Equally impressive, we had many students receiving Merit and Excellence Academic Awards in recognition of their outstanding results achieved in all of their subjects for the year. At Tully SHS we set high expectations, as reflected in the criteria for merit and excellence, so congratulations must go to these exemplary students.
Many parents and members of the local community were on hand to witness students also receive Special Awards and Bursaries generously donated by supporters of our school. Our 2023/2024 School Captains, Grace O’Kane and Jamie Muriata, did a brilliant job of presiding over the evening’s events. The night culminated in the exciting announcement of the winners of the prestigious Junior and Senior Dux awards. This year, Ashley Sanderson was awarded Junior Dux with her excellent results for Year 9, and Maeve Lowe topped her achievements by becoming Senior Dux. Maeve was also named Ampol Allrounder, along with Leyna Tran, who certainly deserved the title of the Trevor Anderson Most Outstanding Student.
Congratulations to all students receiving awards, and a huge thankyou to Mrs Stewart and the Concert and Jazz Bands for the entertainment for the evening. Recognition must also go to the teachers and families of these students, as their success is also a product of your hard work and perseverance.
Mrs Rebekah Bidois
Deputy Principal – Senior Secondary

Mia Simmons – Runner-up Agriculture Futures Award
Jarrod Vipiana – Winner of the Schools Culinary Challenge Award

Formal 2023
This year’s formal theme was In the Palace Garden and the Year 12s transformed the MPC into a garden worthy of Buckingham Palace, complete with its own castle, made by our own Year 12s. The students all looked spectacular in their gowns and suits. The entertainment of the night featured Just Dance, which the 12s had made a staple of at all Tully High events, as well as a live band featuring both staff members and students.
A big thank you again to all the staff and students who were able to help making the night memorable. The food was amazing, the decorations sparkled and the music was great as well.
Sports Awards 2023
The Southern Zone District Sport celebrated a year of achievements at their annual sports award night on Monday 13th November at the Tully SHS MPC. Over 200 students from cluster schools were acknowledged at the awards for selection in 10-12- and 13-19-years district, Peninsula and Queensland teams. Congratulations to the 105 TSHS students on selection in district teams this year.
This year saw many talented athletes from across the cluster represent at Peninsula level with 18 students in 10-12 years sports, and 49 students in the 13-19 years sports. The evenings special awards celebrated both Junior and Senior Sportsperson of the year. Shaun Riley, from Mission Beach State School, won the Ben La Spina Memorial Trophy for 10-12 Junior Sports Person. Alex Greenwood, from Tully State High School, won the 13-19 years Sportsperson of the year. Both students gained Queensland team selection this year, Shaun for Track & Field and Alex for Rugby Union. Congratulations to Tyson on winning the House Spirit Cup for 2023, and Angie Andreson for the Contribution to Sport Award.
Special guests Kimberley Hunt & Essay Banu (both past students of TSHS) treated the audience to an insight into their best school sport memories along with sharing their challenges and achievements in their NRLW careers thus far. Their key messages to the students were around resilience and perseverance and working hard to achieve your goals both on and off the field. Thank you also to the parents, staff and family who have supported the students with their sporting achievements throughout the year.

Food Studies
Term 4 was a busy time in classrooms and kitchens with Food Technology subjects. Students were engaged in a range of cookery concepts and practical application.
Year 10 FFZ
Unit: Food Science
The unit covered a range of cookery concepts regularly used in food preparation. Students learnt the science behind food, preparation and cookery. Some of the terms and techniques they were exposed to included: coagulation, gelatinisation, dextrinization, fermentation, aeration, emulsion and enzymatic browning.
The photographs illustrate biological aeration. The yeast experiment utilised a number of jars covered with a balloon to identify the correct process to maximise carbon dioxide production. The practical application involved students making their own pizza base using yeast.
Year 10 TFD
Unit: Cultural Fusion
This unit explored a range of foods from different countries: ingredients, cooking methods and dishes. Students learnt about sensory and functional properties of food in order to identify which flavours stand out in different cultures, and experimented with how these can be combined to make a Fusion meal.
The photos below feature some of the cultural Fusion dishes students created.
Year 9 FDS
Unit: Food Preservation
This term the Year 9s have been working on sustainability and preservation of food. They have studied food wastage and ways to preserve food to minimise waste, as well as sustainable packaging options for preserved food. They all worked hard on their assessment task, which was to produce and package a sustainable preserved food item and sell it at a market stall to the staff of Tully SHS. They did an exceptional job and the food sold out quickly with the Chilli Jam, Beetroot Relish and Biltong all being crowd favourites.
Year 11 Hospitality
Over the last few weeks, the Year 11 Hospitality classes developed their catering skills: making, presenting and serving the food for the year 12 Graduation. They prepared a variety of sweet and savoury foods and demonstrated exceptional teamwork and skills, showing how far they have come this year.
Year 7 Food Studies
The Year 7s have had a fantastic semester in the kitchen. Their focus has been on building their knowledge and application of skills and techniques in the kitchen. Their confidence in applying basic techniques has improved significantly over the semester. Encourage them to cook a dinner or two and do the dishes from time to time – they know how! Term 4 required students to understand the nutritional value of different ingredients, and applying this knowledge to create a healthy muffin of their own. The students took a lot of pride in their work, which was great to see.
Industrial Technology Term 4
Throughout Term 4, the Industrial Technology students have been busy completing projects with the theme of ‘Re-Use, Re-Purpose and Re-Cycle’. They were given the task of designing and creating a project of their choice, but restricted to utilizing only pallet timber and/or left-over workshop materials.
All students thrived in this area, putting the skills they have learned through the years to great use. Each individual piece was well-thought out. Problem solving skills were put to the test: all students needed to evaluate and adapt designs to suit any emerging issues with materials, quality or sizing. Students worked largely independently throughout the process, again demonstrating how far they have come along this year. Well done!
Thanks to the range of local businesses that helped us out by donating pallets and other materials.
Mr Sachlikidis
Industrial Technology Teacher
Year 10 History
Our final unit in Year 10 History is Popular Culture. Students investigate the changes to fashion trends, popular movies and music, and the global sporting landscape post World War II. Students interrogate the events and people who were significant figures in each decade from the 1950s until today, with each student focusing on one key area of popular culture. Throughout the term, the class has gone back in time to examine not only the beliefs and values of society in each decade, but also the ways teenagers have shaped popular culture and influenced the way we consume fashion, movies, music and sport. For our final assessment of the year, students were tasked with creating a display highlighting the changes in popular culture over the past 70 years. This year our students created incredibly imaginative and interactive displays which have been on show in the library over the past few weeks. It is always awesome to see the creativity and dedication of our Year 10 history students. Make sure you keep an eye out for some of the displays which will be displayed at the Tully Show next year.
Graduation 2023
Wednesday 15 November marked the end of schooling for our Year 12 students, with the whole school gathered in the MPC to say goodbye and good luck to our Seniors.
The ceremony began with Mr Graham congratulating the graduating Class of 2023 and their parents, many of whom were in the audience with siblings and other relatives. Mr Graham gave some excellent advice to the departing seniors, through the medium of Bluey. The Year-level Co-ordinator, Miss Jarick, addressed her cohort for the last time, congratulating them on their success. The students exited the MPC through a guard of honour made up of the Year 11 students, bombarded each other with shaving foam and flour bombs, and then, true to tradition, were sprayed clean by a fire hose courtesy of the Tully Fire Department and of Mr Cameron.
Goodbye and Good Luck Seniors of 2023!
